How to Decorate Inside Spongebob's House in Minecraft

Creating a home on Shelter Island, New York for his family, architect Cary Tamarkin paired back design ideas to the essentials. He simplified the house by using concrete floors, built-in furniture, and lots of wood. The interior decorating is by their neighbor, designer Suzanne Shaker.

A ground-level entryway "is also a place to leave your shoes and hang your hat and towels."

The horizontal line and blue cushions of the built-in sofa connect to the water view. Interior designer Suzanne Shaker added Hans Wegner's Cp5 lounge chairs from Suite NY and Carlos Motta's Asturias armchair from Espasso to echo the house's modern mood. The paper-and-bamboo Akari lanterns from the Noguchi Museum are in harmony with the Japanese-inspired handmade aesthetic. A shaggy Bravoure carpet by Danskina is the same soft gray as the concrete floors.

Light-filled Kitchen

The kitchen is dominated by a luminous glass-and-steel window. "It's a great connection to the street," Tamarkin says. "I like to wave to people passing." Plywood cabinet doors have routed-out circles instead of knobs, a gesture inspired by "some Marcel Breuer dorm furniture." Countertops are pre-cast polished concrete, unstained—like the cypress walls—so they'll gain patina over time. The integral wall clock is a Tamarkin signature.

Tamarkin calls the built-ins he designed "elegant camp furniture." They're all made of inch-thick fir plywood, including the living room's platform sofa.

Modern Vintage

Sliding slatted doors on the master bedroom's closet keep clothing from getting mildewed. Tamarkin copied them from a photo of a 1930s house in a vintage book.

The guest room's simple bed frame was made with painter's linen stretched over a wooden platform and the ends of leftover cypress beams.

Cheery Stripes

To create privacy between the bedrooms and family room, Shaker installed a striped curtain wall based on one in a 1950s Marcel Breuer house. She used a vibrant Malabar stripe because Tamarkin and his wife, Mindy Goldberg, a film producer, also wanted to add "a burst of color."

Serene Sleeping Space

Relaxed and uncontrived, the master bedroom has old-growth cypress paneling glowing on its ceiling and walls. The linen fringe bedcover by G.T. Design is from Ruby Beets Old & New; the bamboo chair is a vintage find from Home. The painting is by a neighbor, Margaret Garrett.

Like her 14-year-old brother, Eli, 11-year-old Lucy Tamarkin has a built-in plywood daybed that runs the length of her bedroom. Inspired by a ship's bunk, it sleeps two children longways. Linens are stored in the drawers below.

Painted cement board panels were inspired by Charles and Ray Eames's midcentury house in Pacific Palisades, California. The color was chosen by architectural color consultant Eve Ashcraft, who used #7495 by Fine Paints of Europe.
